  1. Homer is considered the author of two major Greek epics, the Iliad  
  2. and the Odyssey , written between the 10th and 8th centuries B.C. 
  3. Some scholars question whether the epics were created by Homer. 
  4. Still, the works are regarded as the beginnings of all Greek literature, 
  5. including philosophy. Homer influenced many later epic poets of 
  6. Western literature, including Virgil, John Milton and James Joyce.
